Announcement of the winner will be in mid to late April and presentation of the prize, along with the first public performance of the tune, by the current AUOTC Drums & Pipes, will take place in early June as part of the Centenary celebrations.
Aberdeen Universities Officers’ Training Corps is part of the British Army and was formed in 1912. It continues to provide Aberdeen students with high quality leadership and management training. The Drums and Pipes were officially established in 1924, but pipers have been present since the very first days of AUOTC’s history.
The band continues to this day and has a healthy membership. Over the years, it has performed at a wide range of events, at home and abroad. Some of the more notable performances include a performance for Her Majesty the Queen at Balmoral Castle in 1977 for the Silver Jubilee Celebrations, numerous appearances at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and a memorable part in the Kremlin Tattoo; playing in Moscow’s Red Square.
The Drums and Pipes has seen many high quality pipers (and drummers) pass through its ranks. The achievements of former members of the band are remarkable. This extensive list of achievements includes the winning of the coveted Highland Society of London’s Gold Medal and Clasp for piobaireachd (more than once in each case), the Silver Chanter competition, and the Lorient ‘Macallan’ trophy. Former members have also been at the forefront of the piping world in other ways; leading top flight pipe bands, judging competitions, researching and publishing on piping and taking up posts in the official bodies of the Piping and Pipe Band world.
The AUOTC Association would like to hear from all past members of AUOTC, particularly with the Centenary so close. Please see their website for details: http://theoldboars.smugmug.com/
